Midlife Plot Twist
Share
I think I can now officially welcome you to my midlife crisis. I'm cruising through the middle of my forties this year, and while some men mark such milestones with fancy cars, hair plugs, and/or unwise romantic choices, I’ve foregone all of that and instead decided to write books for a living.
You see, for most of the past year I’ve been fairly silent because I was very busy working a separate, full time job. But since last month, I’ve been silent because I’ve been very busy not having a separate, full-time job. After a round of layoffs at my prior company, I made the decision to accelerate my plans for writing full time. The cynics told me never to quit my day job, but they never mentioned switching careers after a layoff, and I plan to exploit the heck out of this brilliant loophole.
So what have I been doing with all that time that I might have spent filling out job applications and brushing up on my interviewing skills?
- I've been reworking this here website a bit, simplifying the tech and making tweaks to the content.
- I've been focused on fulfilling kickstarter orders.
- I set up a Discord server for fans of the Dark Profit Saga and Arth books. Come talk to us!
- I've started writing Gorm Ingerson's next adventure. Crypt Currency is the first book set in the 8th Age of Arth. Intrigued? Stay tuned for more progress notes, or join my Patreon at the Professional Hero tier to read along!
This is exciting and terrifying all at once. I'm not going to deny that it feels like a dream come true, but I have this creeping sensation that it’s still to be seen if I have a Cinderella story or I’m about to discover the curse of the monkey’s paw. I planned to be writing full time in another five or ten years. But that's not the way it's played out, and like a dungeon master tossing out their source material and trying to improvise a new adventure, I just need to roll with it and do my best. Ultimately, I’m grateful to have this chance, and I want to thank you for being a part of it.
So thank you. Roll for initiative.
